DisplayMate analyzed the display of the new Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max and the report DisplayMate generated contained nothing but positive things about the phone’s display.

The display on the iPhone 13 Pro Max went as far as to win the DisplayMate Best Smartphone Display Award coupled with an A+ Grade.

What is DisplayMate and why are they credited?

DisplayMate is a globally recognized standard for image and picture quality. They optimize, calibrate, test and compare all types of displays from a whole host of devices from phones to TVs in their testing facilities for many of the world’s manufacturers for producing displays.

What makes the iPhone 13 Pro Max Display worthy of the award?

The iPhone 13 Pro Max packs a gigantic 6.7 inch diagonal full-screen display which nearly fills the entirety of the front face from edge to edge.

Since the screen is large, the Aspect Ratio of height : width is 19.5 : 9, leading to a ratio figure of 2.16. In comparison with the other smartphones out in the market with the typical 16 : 9 ratio giving a figure of about 1.78, the Aspect Ratio of the iPhone 13 Pro Max is 22% larger.

This results in the phone having more screen real estate to work with and hence more content can be viewed on the screen at a given time.

The iPhone 13 Pro Max has FaceID for biometric authentication and thus the display has a notch to enable the technology to work. The display is manufactured to accommodate this by having a 0.2 inch high slot cut-out from the top centre to house the earpiece, FaceID and other sensors.

With a larger screen size and aspect ratio, the display is able to have a resolution of 2278 pixels x 1284 pixels, resulting in a 2.8K Full HD+ display with 458 pixels per inch. Apple also upped the screen refresh rate on the iPhone 13 Pro Max to an adaptive 120 Hz Pro Motion display.

Depending on the content being displayed and how quickly the user scrolls, the screen refresh rate variably adapts between 10-120 Hz. This helps conserved battery on the phone too when not in use while giving the user a fluid viewing experience.

Apple calibrates each iPhone display at the factory for color accuracy as well as accurate contrast ratios. The display on the iPhone 13 Pro Max supports both the sRGB Rec.709 and the Wide DCI-P3 color gamut and renders the content displayed by these color gamuts with near to perfect accuracy.

With Automatic Color Management (ACM), the iPhone can correctly display the colors of any image or video being displayed in the Wide DCI-P3 color gamut so that they do not look over saturated nor under saturated.

The Just Noticeable Color Difference test, known as JNCD test was performed on the iPhone 13 Pro Max displays and a score of 0.5 is obtained. The JNCD test is a test to determine whether or not the naked eye can distinguish between two colors.

Color Accuracy of iPhone 13 Pro Max

An obtained score of below 1 is indicative of the fact that there is no distinguishable color difference when looking at the display with the naked eye.

To measure the display’s brightness levels, the auto brightness setting was enabled on the iPhone with a full screen white image being displayed.

The brightness that the display pushes out is 1050 nits for both the sRGB and DCI-P3 color gamuts while with auto brightness turned off the peak brightness tops at 846 nits.

These figures are valid for when the display is looked at head on. When viewing the screen at an angle, the display brightness falls. At an angle of 30°, the brightness falls by 24% with a JNCD score of 3.1 for white shift.

The display also has Night Shift to help tint the display to a warmer tone at night to ease eye strain and True Tone to match the screen temperature to that of the temperature of the ambient light as well HDR10 and Dolby Vision support.

With these technologies coupled with the amazing technology packed into the display, it is very easily the best in class for its time.
